St. Anne's Episcopal Church

St. Anne's Episcopal Church, about 2 km south of Middletown town centre, is a handsome mid-19th-century Gothic Revival stone church set in a large graveyard that functions as one of the more evocative historic sites in the area. The building is modest but well-proportioned, and the graveyard — with its 18th- and 19th-century headstones in varying states of preservation — gives a tangible sense of the community's long history.

The church grounds adjoin St. Anne's Episcopal School, which occupies a much larger campus. The school and the church together are a significant presence in the local landscape. The church itself is open for services and sometimes for individual visitors; the graveyard is accessible at most times.

A story
St. Anne's was founded in 1703, making it one of the oldest parishes in Delaware. The current stone building dates from the 1840s and is built on the site of the original colonial church. The graveyard surrounding it contains headstones dating back to the early 18th century, including markers for several of the Scots-Irish families who founded the surrounding farming communities.
