The Thousand Islands are a low maze of mangrove islets in the Banana River Lagoon behind Cocoa Beach. Kayak tours move through narrow channels where manatees, dolphins, herons, and pelicans are possible.
It is the best counterweight to a beach day: quieter, greener, and much closer to wild Florida than the souvenir strip along A1A.
