The Gulf beach itself is Panama City Beach's best feature and the reason people come. The sand is unusually white — quartz-white, almost blinding in full sun — and the water is a clear emerald-green that looks more Caribbean than Atlantic. At the right angle in the right light, it is genuinely beautiful.
The beach runs for more than 20 miles along the barrier peninsula and is publicly accessible at various points, though parking can be a challenge in high season. The gentlest surf in the Gulf makes it safe for children and casual swimmers, though summer storms can generate rough conditions quickly. Early morning is the best time to walk it — before the crowds and in the raking light that shows off the color of the water at its best.
