Pioneer Florida Museum and Village

A few miles north of downtown, the Pioneer Florida Museum is an open-air collection of relocated nineteenth-century buildings — a one-room schoolhouse, a Methodist church, a railroad depot, a sugar mill, and an antebellum farmhouse — assembled to show what cracker Florida looked like before air conditioning and theme parks. It is run by volunteers, many of them descendants of the original settlers, and the storytelling is correspondingly detailed and personal.

Bring an hour or two. The grounds also host a popular Pioneer Florida Day every Labor Day weekend with bluegrass, blacksmith demonstrations, and old-time crafts. Open Tuesday through Saturday; modest admission.

A story
The museum's centrepiece is the Trilby train depot, a yellow wooden structure originally built in 1896 for the small lumber town of Trilby a few miles north. When Trilby's railway was abandoned, the depot was moved here piece by piece in 1975 and reassembled by volunteers.
