Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

America's first national wildlife refuge, created to protect nesting brown pelicans.

Pelican Island is small, but its importance is large. In 1903 Theodore Roosevelt protected the rookery here, making it the first national wildlife refuge in the United States and setting a pattern for protected bird habitat across the country.

The refuge is best as a slow stop: boardwalks, lagoon views, mangroves, and birds rather than big-ticket spectacle. Bring binoculars if you have them.
