The Gulf Pier extends 1,000 feet into the Gulf of Mexico from the western side of Mullet Key and is one of the longest free fishing piers in Florida. You do not need a fishing licence to fish from it — that is covered by the county. A bait and tackle shop at the base sells rods, bait, ice, and cold drinks, and rents gear by the half day.
Even if you do not fish, the walk to the end is worth it for the views back across the dunes and out over the green-blue Gulf. Common catches include Spanish mackerel, snook, sheepshead, and the occasional tarpon. Pelicans loaf on the rails, dolphins surface around the pilings, and at sunset the pier becomes a popular spot to watch the sky go pink. There is a concession stand selling grilled-fish sandwiches that is better than it has any right to be.
