Silver Mountain Resort is Kellogg's economic successor to the Bunker Hill mine — a ski and mountain biking resort accessible by a 3.1-mile gondola ride that starts downtown and climbs nearly 3,400 feet to the mountain top. In winter, the resort has over 80 runs spread across 1,500 acres, including serious terrain for advanced skiers. In summer, the gondola becomes a hiking and mountain biking lift, with trails descending through forest that would not otherwise be accessible.
The gondola ride itself is worth taking regardless of the season — the views over the Silver Valley, the Coeur d'Alene National Forest, and the surrounding mountains are excellent. The round trip without skiing or biking is inexpensive and takes about an hour. The resort has a base lodge with rental equipment and a restaurant.
