Madison County Courthouse

A well-preserved early 20th-century courthouse on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Madison County Courthouse stands in the centre of Rexburg and is one of the better examples of early 20th-century civic architecture in eastern Idaho. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been maintained in good condition — it still functions as the county courthouse, which gives it a working dignity that restored-but-empty historic buildings often lack. The exterior stonework and classical detailing are worth a look if you are walking through the town centre.

It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a short walking circuit of downtown Rexburg — the tabernacle, the courthouse, the main square — it rounds out a picture of a town that took itself seriously when it was being built. Small Idaho cities of this era put real civic ambition into their public buildings, and the courthouse reflects that. The surrounding downtown is quiet by most standards, but the historic core gives it a coherence that newer American small cities often lack.
