Standard Addition Sears Homes

Compact neighbourhood of Sears kit houses built for Standard Oil mine workers in 1917 and 1918.

Standard Addition is a residential district northeast of downtown where Standard Oil ordered Sears kit houses for mine workers during the First World War. The result was a concentrated neighbourhood of mail-order houses, with many of the original models still standing.

It is a subtle sight, so come for a slow walk rather than a single landmark. The historical marker on University Street helps orient the visit, and Rice Street runs through the district. The appeal is in seeing how a catalogue product became a real neighbourhood, not a preserved museum row.
