Chicagoland Speedway is a major oval racing track south of Joliet, opened in 2001. It has hosted NASCAR and other large racing events, giving the city a motor-sport identity that fits the wider Route 66 and road-trip feel of the area.
The speedway is only worth a special trip when something is on, but racing fans should check the calendar before dismissing Joliet as just another outer Chicago city.
