Little Brick House

The Little Brick House is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Illinois, a small Federal-style house that has been preserved and operated as a museum by the Vandalia Historical Society. Built in the early 1820s during Vandalia's years as state capital, the house is furnished in the period style with items appropriate to an early Illinois household.

The museum is modest but genuine — the kind of local history museum that does a real job of showing what life was actually like in a frontier town of the 1820s and 1830s. A guided tour takes about 30 minutes. It is a short walk from the statehouse and the courthouse square.

A story
The house was built around 1820 for Eunice Farmer, one of Vandalia's earliest settlers, and has been a museum since 1940. It gives a rare ground-level view of middle-class life in a frontier state capital — not the grand politicians' houses but the everyday domestic world of the town that supported them.
