The Des Plaines River Trail is a long, flat trail that runs about 50 miles north–south through Cook and Lake counties, following the river through a chain of forest preserves. The stretch through Wheeling links Lake County's preserves north of town with Cook County's chain further south, mostly under canopy and away from roads.
Good for cycling, running, or a slow walk. There are several access points in town and parking at the Camp Reinberg Forest Preserve and at the trailhead off Hintz Road.
