A handsome streetcar-suburb neighbourhood about six miles east of downtown, organised around the original Butler University campus. Founded in 1870 and named after Washington Irving, Irvington has the densest concentration of late-19th-century Victorian and Arts and Crafts homes in the city. The Bona Thompson Memorial Center is a small free local-history museum.
The Halloween Festival each October is one of Indianapolis's best neighbourhood events. Several small bars, restaurants, and the Magick Candle metaphysical shop give the central commercial blocks a quiet, slightly counter-cultural feel.
