The Working Men's Institute was founded in 1838 and still serves as a library. That alone would make it unusual, but the upstairs museum and special collections make it one of New Harmony's best stops for understanding the town's long afterlife.
Its exhibits cover the Harmonist and Owenite periods, natural history, local artifacts, and the belief that practical knowledge should be available to ordinary working people.
