Busy Bee

Family-run ice cream stand open from May to September

A walk-up ice cream stand on Cullen Street, the Busy Bee has been a Rensselaer summer fixture for decades. Soft-serve cones, sundaes, malts, and slushes are the menu; everything is cheap; the line on a Friday evening tells you everything you need to know.

The shop closes for the winter and reopens in early May — the first day of opening is treated as a minor town holiday. Locals warn newcomers about the high sulphur content in the local water (it can take a day or two to adjust); the ice cream, made off-site, avoids the problem.
