The McPherson County Courthouse is a handsome late-Victorian public building completed in 1894, built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style that was popular in Kansas public architecture during the wheat-boom years of the 1880s and 90s. The red sandstone exterior, round arched entrance, and prominent corner tower give it a solidity that reflects the optimism of the era — McPherson County was prospering from wheat and hoped to keep doing so.
It sits at the centre of downtown McPherson and remains an active courthouse. The surrounding blocks have a reasonable collection of late-19th and early-20th century commercial buildings in reasonably good repair. If you walk the downtown area, the courthouse square is the natural starting point.
