McPherson Opera House

The McPherson Opera House is one of the better-preserved 19th-century performance venues in Kansas. Built in 1888 in a Romanesque Revival style, the brick exterior with its round-arched windows and corbelled cornice is a standout on the downtown block. The interior has been carefully restored and retains its original stage configuration.

Today it functions as a community theatre venue, with the McPherson Community Theatre producing several productions per year, ranging from musicals to dramatic plays. The box office can tell you the current schedule. Even if no performance is scheduled, it is worth looking at from the outside — downtown McPherson has several blocks of well-maintained late-Victorian commercial buildings, and the Opera House is the centrepiece.

A story
The Opera House was built in 1888 and served as the cultural centre of McPherson for decades, hosting touring vaudeville acts, political speakers, and early silent films. After years of decline it was thoroughly restored in the 1990s, and the McPherson Community Theatre now produces several shows a year there. The building looks almost exactly as it did when it opened.
