Winfield Public Carnegie Library

Stone Carnegie library from 1915, still in service

A handsome stone Carnegie library opened in 1915, on the corner of Millington and 9th, still in daily use as the Winfield Public Library more than a century later. Andrew Carnegie's foundation funded around 1,700 libraries across the United States between 1886 and 1919; this is one of the better-preserved Kansas examples.

The reading room on the main floor has the original oak woodwork and stained-glass transom windows. Free to wander in, browse, and admire. A short visit complements the courthouse and other downtown stops.
