Grace Episcopal Church

Gothic Revival church from the 1880s in the heart of the commercial historic district

Grace Episcopal Church at 216 East 6th Street is the architectural highlight of Hopkinsville's commercial historic district. The Gothic Revival building dates from the 1880s and is one of the few structures from that era to survive largely intact. The interior is dark and handsome, with stained glass windows and exposed timber framing typical of high Victorian church architecture.

The church is still an active congregation and is generally open during services. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the commercial district. Worth a quick look if you are walking the downtown area.

A story
Grace Episcopal Church was established by some of Hopkinsville's most prominent tobacco families in the 19th century. Its Gothic Revival building, with stained glass windows and a distinctive stone tower, survived the Night Rider raids that terrorized the town in 1907-08 — the church records from that period make for unsettling reading.
