A Gothic Revival castle on the bluff above the Mississippi, built in the 1840s and restored in the 1990s. Mark Twain famously called it "a whitewashed castle... this monstrous specimen of architectural depravity." Now a museum of Louisiana political history, with exhibits on the state's colourful past. The stained-glass dome inside is worth seeing.
