The USS Kidd (DD-661) is a Fletcher-class destroyer that saw action in the Pacific during World War II and in Korea, now permanently moored on the Baton Rouge waterfront as a museum ship. Visitors can walk the decks, explore the engine room, climb into the gun turrets, and see the cramped quarters where the crew of 330 men lived at sea.
The museum complex alongside the ship holds a collection of warplanes displayed outdoors, along with exhibits covering the history of the vessel and Louisiana's broader military contribution. The Kidd is one of the few World War II destroyers open to the public, and the combination of shipboard access and Mississippi River setting makes this one of the more atmospheric military museums on the Gulf Coast. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
