Southdown Plantation is a nineteenth-century sugar plantation house, now used as the Terrebonne Museum of History and Culture. Its pink exterior is hard to miss, but the stronger reason to go is the local collection inside: parish history, sugar production, Mardi Gras material, and family stories from the bayou country.
As with any plantation visit in Louisiana, the building is only part of the story. Treat it as a way into Terrebonne Parish history, including the labour and landscape that supported the sugar economy.
