Sam Houston Jones State Park protects swampy lakes, pine woods, cypress, and Spanish moss north of Lake Charles. Trails and waterways make it the easiest nature outing from the city.
Birdlife is a good reason to come, especially during migration. Bring insect repellent in warm months and expect a very different pace from the casino and lakefront parts of town.
