Cane River Creole National Historical Park

National park preserving Oakland and Magnolia plantation landscapes along Cane River

Cane River Creole National Historical Park preserves two plantation landscapes, Oakland and Magnolia, south of Natchitoches along Cane River. The National Park Service interprets more than two centuries of life here: French Creole landowners, enslaved people, skilled workers, tenant farmers, and descendants whose families remained tied to the river.

Oakland is the easier starting point, with a remarkably intact set of outbuildings and domestic spaces. Magnolia's surviving quarters, store, gin barn, and rare cotton press tell a harder, more direct story about plantation labour and the long afterlife of slavery. Give the park enough time; it is the deepest sight in the Natchitoches area.
