The Mountain Trail

Easy hike up to a viewpoint over Long Pond

"The Mountain" is the informal local name for a low forested hill on the western shore of Long Pond, set in the Kennebec Highlands conservation lands. A well-marked trail climbs from a small trailhead off Route 27 through hemlock and birch forest to a series of open ledges with views across Long Pond toward the village and beyond to Great Pond.

The hike is moderate — about a 600-foot climb over a mile and a half, so an hour up and a little less down. The trail is well graded and family-friendly, and the open ledges have enough room for a long picnic. Combine with a paddle on Long Pond to make a half day. The trail is maintained by the 7 Lakes Alliance, which produces a useful free trail map available at Day's Store and the village library.
