The Tides Institute is a small but serious arts institution occupying a handsome historic bank building on Water Street. Its focus is the art, culture, and history of the Passamaquoddy Bay region — the borderland where Maine and New Brunswick meet — with a particular emphasis on the Wabanaki peoples and the area's maritime past. Exhibitions change regularly and include both historical material and contemporary work. The institute also maintains an archive, runs residencies, and brings artists to this remote corner of the coast. Worth an hour of your time even if the current show doesn't immediately grab you.
