A former chicken farm building on Route 1 between Ellsworth and Bucksport, the Big Chicken Barn houses one of the largest concentrations of antiques and used books in New England. The ground floor is divided among dozens of dealers selling everything from Depression glass to Maine ephemera; the upper floor holds well over a hundred thousand books, magazines and records.
It is the kind of place where an hour easily becomes three. Prices are reasonable for the region, and the staff are good at pointing you toward what you actually want amid the maze of aisles.
