The Grand

1930s Art Deco theatre still in active use as a performing arts centre

The Grand sits on Main Street in the heart of downtown Ellsworth, a small but beautifully maintained Art Deco theatre from the late 1930s. The interior keeps much of the original detailing — geometric plasterwork, sconces, and a single-screen auditorium with a deep stage.

Programming is a mix of independent films, touring musicians, and locally produced theatre. Even if you have no time for a show, it is worth ducking inside the lobby during a daytime visit. The volunteers running the box office are happy to give an impromptu tour if it is quiet.

A story
Built in 1938 as a movie palace, the Grand closed in the 1970s and was nearly demolished before locals raised the money to restore it. Today the original Art Deco marquee still glows over Main Street and the auditorium hosts films, concerts, and community theatre.
