Reconstructed State House

Rebuilt 1676 state house marking the political centre of Maryland's first capital.

The reconstructed State House stands for the period when St. Mary's City was Maryland's capital. The original building was completed in the 1670s, when the settlement was still the political centre of the colony.

It is a modest building by later state-capital standards, which is exactly what makes it useful. The scale shows how small and raw early colonial government was on the Chesapeake frontier.
