Bolton sits at the heart of one of the best apple-growing areas in Massachusetts, with several pick-your-own orchards operating through September and October. The combination of well-drained sandy loam soil, cold winters, and warm summers produces apples of exceptional quality, and the orchards around Bolton grow dozens of varieties including heirloom types rarely found in supermarkets.
Arrive on a weekend morning in early October and you will find families from Boston filling bags with Cortland, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, and Macoun apples. Most orchards also sell fresh-pressed cider, cider donuts fried to order, and pumpkins. It is one of those seasonal rituals that New Englanders take seriously, and the setting — rolling hills, stone walls, old farmhouses — plays its part. The peak window is narrow: two or three weeks in late September to mid-October.
