A 275-acre Victorian garden cemetery in Jamaica Plain, founded in 1848 as a counterpart to the better-known Mount Auburn across the river in Cambridge. Forest Hills is wilder and more atmospheric — winding paths over rolling hills, a small lake, granite arches, and several thousand Victorian and Edwardian funerary monuments under old oaks and pines.

Among those buried here are Eugene O'Neill, e.e. cummings, Anne Sexton, William Lloyd Garrison, Trefry & Partridge (who designed the cemetery itself), and the Boston firefighters who died in the Cocoanut Grove disaster of 1942. A small contemporary sculpture program scatters modern pieces among the tombstones, and an annual Lantern Festival in summer floats hundreds of candle-lit paper lanterns on the lake.

The cemetery is the last stop on the Orange Line; the entrance is opposite the T station. Maps at the gate mark the celebrity graves and the most ornate Victorian sections.
