Kendall Square

Kendall Square sits at the east end of MIT's campus and has transformed from a rundown industrial district into one of the densest concentrations of biotech and tech companies in the world. Pfizer, Google, Amazon, and dozens of biotech startups have offices here. The neighbourhood is not conventionally interesting for tourists, but the new restaurants and bars that have opened to serve the tech workforce are some of the better in Cambridge, and the architectural density is worth seeing.

The Kendall/MIT Red Line station is the gateway. Just outside the fare barriers, levers on the wall activate the Kendall Band — a three-piece kinetic sound sculpture that plays different tones depending on the train movements. The MIT Museum relocated nearby and makes for a good half-day. On summer evenings the outdoor spaces around the biotech campuses are surprisingly pleasant.
