Wychmere Harbor

Wychmere Harbor is the heart of Harwich Port — a small, sheltered working harbour with fishing boats, lobster traps stacked on the docks, and a clutch of pleasure craft at moorings. It is one of the more attractive harbours on the south shore of the Cape, and a good place to watch the comings and goings of a fishing community that still earns its living from the sea.

Fishing charters for striped bass, bluefish, and tuna operate out of the harbour from late spring through autumn. The walk along the harbour edge past Bank Street Beach and along the inlet is pleasant at any time of day, and the restaurants near the water are some of the best in town.

A story
Wychmere Harbor was created artificially in 1888 by cutting a channel through the barrier beach — before that it was a freshwater pond. The transformation turned a quiet inland body of water into one of the most picturesque small working harbors on the Cape, a detail that most visitors photographing its lobster boats never know.
