The Pocumtuck Ridge Trail runs for 20 miles along the northernmost spur of the Metacomet Ridge, a 116-mile volcanic traprock formation that crosses Massachusetts from north to south. The Deerfield section passes through forest and over rocky outcrops with good views west toward the Connecticut River Valley. Day hikes of 4–8 miles are easily arranged from trailheads near town.
The ridge was a significant feature in the lives of the Pocumtuck people who lived in this valley before European settlement, and their name is attached to both the ridge and the valley. The hike back toward the valley, with the Connecticut River below you, gives a sense of the landscape that shaped the town's history.
