The Street

The Street is Old Deerfield's main road and one of the most intact 18th-century streetscapes in the United States. A mile-long corridor of houses, many of them built between 1720 and 1810, lines a wide, elm-shaded avenue that has changed surprisingly little in two centuries. The houses are mostly private or part of the Historic Deerfield complex; you walk the road to experience the ensemble as much as the individual buildings.

The effect is cumulative — house after house after house, each different but all of the same era, the road wide and quiet, the trees arching overhead. It is one of those places where the past feels genuinely present rather than reconstructed.
