Historic Deerfield

Historic Deerfield is an outdoor living history museum consisting of 11 historic houses along The Street, most of them furnished with original pieces from the 17th–19th centuries. The collection of early American furniture, silver, ceramics, and textiles is among the finest in the country. Individual house tours run throughout the day, led by guides who know the stories behind the objects as well as the architecture.

A single admission ticket covers all the houses; allow at least half a day to do the complex justice. The museum's focus is on the material culture of the Connecticut River Valley, so the objects have a direct connection to the place — many were made here, owned here, and have never moved.

A story
The museum was largely the creation of Henry and Helen Flynt, a couple from Greenfield who began buying and restoring old houses in Deerfield in the 1940s. What started as personal interest became a decades-long preservation project that eventually saved most of the 18th-century buildings on The Street from demolition or collapse. The Flynts are buried in the town's ancient cemetery.
