Burial Hill

Hilltop cemetery with some of the oldest Pilgrim graves in America and good harbor views

A short, steep walk from the center of town takes you to the top of Burial Hill, a glacial drumlin that served as the site of Plymouth's first fort and now holds the oldest cemetery in Plymouth. Governor William Bradford is buried here, along with dozens of other first-generation colonists.

The gravestones date from the 1620s onward, many still legible, carved with the winged-skull motifs characteristic of early New England Puritan stonework. The hilltop gives one of the better views in town — the harbor, Long Beach, and the bay spread out below.

The walk up from Leyden Street takes about five minutes. Free, always open.
