Comstock House

The Comstock House, built in 1882, is Moorhead's best-preserved Victorian-era home and gives a detailed picture of prosperous life in the 19th-century Red River Valley. Solomon Comstock was one of Moorhead's founders — a lawyer, politician, and entrepreneur who built his fortune as the town grew into a regional hub. The house he built is appropriately substantial: Queen Anne style, with original furnishings, wallpaper, and decorative arts mostly intact.

The Minnesota Historical Society operates the house as a museum, with guided tours that cover both the architecture and the history of the Comstock family. The level of original material is unusually high — most of the furnishings are original rather than period reproductions. The garden is restored to its 1880s design. It is the kind of site that regional history enthusiasts find exceptionally rewarding and casual visitors find mildly interesting; adjust expectations accordingly.

A story
Solomon Comstock was not only a founder of Moorhead but also a US Congressman and a trustee of several Minnesota colleges. His daughter Ada Comstock became president of Radcliffe College in 1923 — one of the first women to head a major American academic institution. The house that produced her now serves as a museum of how the progressive elite of the northern Great Plains actually lived.
