Big Aspen Recreation Area is a trail area northwest of Virginia, near Britt. In summer it is used for hiking and mountain biking; from late fall into early spring the groomed trails turn it into one of the Iron Range's better cross-country skiing spots.
The draw is simple: forest, space, and trails with enough variety for both casual outings and more serious exercise. Check local conditions before going in winter, since the quality of the skiing depends on grooming and snow cover.
