Lookout Mountain, a few miles north of Virginia, has hiking and cross-country ski trails over glacier-smoothed granite and through northern Minnesota forest. The route also gives a sense of the Iron Range landscape, with traces of mining country and a Laurentian Divide marker nearby. It is a good outdoor counterpoint to the region's museums and mine overlooks.
