University of Southern Mississippi Arts

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) brings a level of cultural programming to Hattiesburg that outstrips what most cities of this size would otherwise have. The performing arts calendar runs through the academic year (September to April) and includes the USM Symphony Orchestra, Opera Theatre USM, student theatre productions, and an international visiting artist series that has brought nationally recognised names to the campus.

The McCain Library and Archives on the USM campus holds one of the most important collections of Mississippi history and literature in the state, including original manuscripts from William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, and other Mississippi writers. The Museum of Art on campus has rotating exhibitions of contemporary and historical work, free to the public. Check the USM arts calendar at the start of any visit — there is almost always something worth attending.
