A. K. Shaifer House

The A. K. Shaifer House marks the opening scene of the Battle of Port Gibson. Shortly after midnight on 1 May 1863, Union troops advancing inland from Bruinsburg met Confederate pickets near the house, and the fight that followed opened Grant's move toward Vicksburg.

The house itself is modest, but the setting helps the battle make sense. Pair it with Grand Gulf and the battlefield markers rather than treating it as a standalone house museum.
