Windsor Ruins

Windsor Ruins is the reason many travelers know Port Gibson at all: twenty-three full columns and five partial columns from a vast Greek Revival plantation house, standing alone in the countryside southwest of town. The mansion was completed just before the Civil War and burned in 1890, leaving only the masonry columns and fragments of ironwork.

The sight is haunting, but it needs context. Windsor was built from plantation wealth in a slave society, used during the Civil War, and later reduced to a romantic ruin. Visit for the architecture, but do not let the beauty flatten the history.
