Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge

Noxubee is the quiet counterweight to Starkville's college energy. The refuge protects forests, lakes, and wetland habitat south of town, with boardwalks, overlooks, and trails open in daylight. It was established for migratory birds and remains one of the better easy nature stops in this part of Mississippi.

Bring binoculars if you have them. The most rewarding visits are slow ones: a boardwalk, a lake edge, and enough patience for herons, woodpeckers, and other wetland life to appear.
