Akers Ferry

One of the few remaining cable-driven car ferries on a U.S. river

Akers Ferry crosses the Current River on county road KH and is part of the working road network — locals use it, the post office uses it, and tourists tend to find it by accident. The barge takes one or two cars at a time and is winched across by a cable spanning the river. The crossing takes a couple of minutes; the ride is free.

Beside being a working ferry, Akers is one of the most popular put-in points for floats down the Current to Pulltite and beyond. The store and outfitter at the landing rents canoes and kayaks and runs shuttle service back from the take-outs.

A story
Akers is one of fewer than a dozen still-operating cable ferries left in the United States, and the only car ferry in Missouri. The crossing has been here since at least the 1870s; the current flat-bottomed barge with its diesel engine and overhead cable is a more recent replacement of a hand-cranked version that ran into the 1930s.
