A small population of free-roaming horses lives in the bottoms along the Current River and the Jacks Fork. There are usually two or three distinct bands, totaling around thirty animals. They graze on the open meadows between the river bluffs and forest and move from one bottom to another over the seasons.
The most reliable places to see them are the Broadfoot Trail, the Two Rivers junction area, and the Shawnee Creek bottom. Patience helps — they are not tame and a quiet approach is required. They are largely unbothered by canoeists drifting past, but bolt at the sight of someone walking quickly toward them.
The herd is protected and self-sustaining. The Park Service publishes general guidance on viewing locations at visitor centres if you ask.
