The Jewel Basin Hiking Area sits in the Swan Range above Bigfork, about 15 miles from the village by road, and it is one of the best hiking destinations in northwest Montana. The area contains 35 named lakes strung through a high-country basin between 4,500 and 7,600 feet of elevation, with trails that range from short walks to lake-hopping multi-day routes.
The designation as a hiking-only area — no horses, no mountain bikes, no motorised vehicles — keeps the trails less crowded than comparable wilderness in the region. The main trailhead is at Camp Misery, reached by a gravel road from Highway 83. From there, trails fan out in several directions, with Mount Aeneas (7,528 feet) offering the best panoramic view: on a clear day you can see Flathead Lake shimmering far below to the west.
Wildflowers peak in July; huckleberries ripen in August. Both grizzly bears and black bears use the area, so standard precautions apply.
