Every January, Elko fills with cowboys, cowgirls, ranchers, and musicians from across the American West for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, one of the most authentic folk art events in the country. For a week, the Western Folklife Center and venues around town host poetry readings, music performances, workshops, and panels that celebrate the living culture of people who work the land and manage livestock for a living.
The gathering is not a performance of nostalgia but a genuine working community coming together. The poetry is original, the music is rooted in ranch life, and the conversations in the hallways are often as interesting as the main stage events. Attendance runs to several thousand and hotels fill quickly — book well ahead if you want to be here for the core week. The event is organised by the Western Folklife Center.
