Rye Patch State Recreation Area spreads around a long reservoir on the Humboldt River north of Lovelock. It is a practical desert-water escape: boating, fishing, swimming, picnics, and open Great Basin views rather than manicured scenery.
It makes sense if you are already driving I-80 or want an outdoor half-day from Lovelock. In hot weather, shade and water matter more than ambition.
