Extraterrestrial Highway

Nevada State Route 375, officially the Extraterrestrial Highway, runs 158 miles through the high desert between Warm Springs and Crystal Springs, passing through Rachel roughly in the middle. Driving it is an experience in itself: the road is arrow-straight across a broad valley floor, flanked by desert ranges, and the silence and emptiness are absolute. Traffic is light enough that you can stop in the middle of the road for photographs without much risk.

The highway passes close to the northern boundary of the Nevada Test and Training Range, and the signs warning trespassers that force may be used are genuine — the perimeter is patrolled and the cameras on the fence posts are real. The standard advice is not to cross the boundary or block the access roads. What you can do is drive slowly, look at the sky, and experience the particular quality of light in the Nevada basin and range country at sunset. The road turns golden and the surrounding mountains go purple and the whole thing feels appropriately cinematic for a place this loaded with mythology.

A story
Nevada State Route 375 was officially renamed the Extraterrestrial Highway in 1996, partly as a tourism promotion and partly because the name fit. The state legislature passed the designation unanimously — it was not a close vote. The road runs past the northern boundary of the Nevada Test and Training Range, which includes Area 51, and the restricted airspace above means you will see almost no commercial aircraft, but you may see things moving in the sky that are harder to explain.
